The IRS does not have a fax number

It has a different one for each form that can be faxed, and most forms cannot be faxed at all. Seven are below with the number the IRS publishes for each, and four common ones are listed because the answer for them is no.

What you are looking for depends on the form

There is no switchboard. Each form the IRS accepts by fax has its own number, several of them have a different number depending on which state you are in, and the state groupings are not the same from form to form — Wisconsin faxes to one coast for Form 2553 and the other for Form 2848. A list that gives you “the IRS fax number” is a list that will send your document to the wrong processing center. If Form 2553 is the one in front of you, where to fax Form 2553 sets out both of its numbers, the states each one covers, and the deadline the election runs against.

Everything below was read off the IRS page that publishes it, on the date shown under each one. Nothing here came from another fax service’s list.

This is the one form here where faxing does something mailing does not. The instructions ask you to provide your own fax number so the IRS can fax the EIN back, generally within four business days.

14039 — Report that someone filed a return using your identity

Identity Theft Affidavit

Destination record
Form 14039
855-807-5720
Everyone except those responding to an IRS notice or letter that prints its own fax number. If you are responding to a notice and it shows a fax number, send it there instead; if the notice shows no fax number, follow the mailing instructions on the notice.

The form asks for a cover sheet marked Confidential, and names online submission as the preferred method — attachments are not available that way, so a fax is the route when you have documents to include.

855-821-0094
All other transcripts: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

Two charts, and which one you are on depends on the transcript rather than on you: the same number serves different states depending on whether you are requesting an individual transcript or any other kind. Two of the three numbers appear in both charts under different state lists, which is the single easiest thing on this page to get wrong.

911 — Ask the Taxpayer Advocate Service for help

Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance

Destination record
Form 911
855-828-2723
Sending from inside the United States.
304-707-9793
Sending the form from overseas. The form notes this is not a toll-free number for US taxpayers.

One pair of numbers for the whole country — no state chart, which makes this the simplest row here. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is independent within the IRS, so this is not a number for an ordinary filing; it is for a problem the IRS has not resolved. The form also accepts email, and warns that email to TAS is not encrypted.

Forms it does not

These come up constantly in the same searches, and the answer is the same each time: there is no number to send them to. Faxing them somewhere plausible does not file them.

8822 — Change your home address with the IRS

Change of Address

The IRS publishes no fax number for this. Mail only. The form's Where To File block routes you to one of several Treasury addresses by state and by which box you checked, and gives no fax number. Bona fide residents of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands file with their own territorial tax authority instead.

1040 — File your tax return

U.S. Individual Income Tax Return

The IRS publishes no fax number for this. The IRS publishes no fax number for a return. It is filed electronically, or mailed to the address for your state — which differs depending on whether a payment is enclosed.

8832 — Choose how your entity is taxed

Entity Classification Election

The IRS publishes no fax number for this. Mail only. The where-to-file page gives two addresses by state and no fax number, which surprises people who have just faxed Form 2553 to make a related election.

8822-B — Change a business address or responsible party

Change of Address or Responsible Party — Business

The IRS publishes no fax number for this. Mail only. The form's own Where To File block says to send it to the address that applies to you — Kansas City, MO 64999 or Ogden, UT 84201-0023 — and gives no fax number.

Before you send, check the number against your own paperwork

If the IRS wrote to you, the number on the notice wins. Correspondence routes to the unit handling your case, and that unit’s fax number is not always the one on the public where-to-file page. This is explicit for Form 14039: if the notice prints a fax number, the IRS asks you to use it instead of the toll-free one.

The instructions for Forms 2848 and 8821 carry their own caution, and it is the honest frame for this whole page: these numbers may change without notice. The IRS posts changes under Recent Developments on each form’s page. Two minutes checking the source link under a number is cheaper than sending a power of attorney to whoever holds that line now.

How this page gets checked again

Every number carries the date a person read it off an IRS page. The oldest reading here is from September 13, 2026. A check in our build fails the site when any of those readings passes six months, so a number cannot quietly age on this page — it either gets re-read or it comes off.

What that does not do is notice the IRS changing a number this morning. Nothing we run notices that within the day, and no amount of re-checking would: the source is a web page the IRS edits when it likes, and the gap between our last read and your send is real. That is why the source link and the read date sit under every number rather than a badge saying the page is verified. You can check the number yourself in the time it takes to read this sentence, and on a document that matters you should.

Sending one

A fax is the last step of this, not the hard part. You have a form, a deadline, and a number — upload the pages here, check the preview, and send. No account, nothing to cancel, and the card is authorized when you press send and charged only once the receiving fax system acknowledges the pages. If it never does, you are not charged.

Form 14039 asks for a cover sheet marked Confidential. Ours is generated with the routing fields filled in from what you entered, and it has a note field for the line that form wants — what belongs on one covers the rest. What you get back is a transmission record with the number dialed, the page count and the time. A confirmed record is evidence the receiving fax system answered and acknowledged your pages; a failed one records what was attempted and what is still unknown. Neither is evidence the IRS accepted the filing, and the difference is worth two minutes before you rely on it.
