Form 2553 has two fax numbers, and your state picks which one
The IRS publishes one for a group of eastern states and one for everywhere else. Both are below, read off the IRS page that publishes them. The election has to be filed no more than 2 months and 15 days after the beginning of the tax year it takes effect, and if you send it by fax the original stays with you.

This split is not the split Forms 2848 and 8821 use. Wisconsin faxes east here and west there; Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi do the opposite.

The deadline is the part that is hard to undo
The election has to be filed no more than 2 months and 15 days after the beginning of the tax year it is to take effect, or at any time during the tax year before that one.

A late election is not automatically refused. The instructions set out relief under Rev. Proc. 2013-30 and what has to be written on the form to ask for it.

Whether a particular late election qualifies is a question for the instructions and for whoever prepares the return, not for a fax service. What a fax gives you against a deadline is a record with a time on it — and what that record does and does not prove is worth two minutes before relying on it.
If you fax it, keep the original
The instructions ask for the original election rather than a photocopy, and say that a corporation filing by fax keeps the original Form 2553 in its permanent records.

That is a real difference from mailing and the one procedural thing worth knowing before you choose. Mailing sends the signed original to the service center; faxing sends an image of it and leaves the signed paper in your files, where the instructions ask it to stay.
What happens after it arrives
The service center notifies the corporation whether the election is accepted and when it takes effect, and the instructions say to expect that determination generally within 60 days of filing.

Nothing in a fax transmission record speaks to any of that. A confirmation says the receiving fax system answered and acknowledged the pages; the determination is a separate letter from the IRS on the IRS’s own timetable, and neither we nor any fax service can tell you it arrived.
Form 8832 is the neighboring election, and it cannot be faxed
People filing Form 2553 often have Form 8832 in the same pile, and the answer is not the same.
The IRS publishes no fax number for this. Mail only. The where-to-file page gives two addresses by state and no fax number, which surprises people who have just faxed Form 2553 to make a related election.

Check the number against your own paperwork first
If the IRS has written to you about this election, the number on that notice wins. Correspondence routes to the unit handling your case and that unit’s fax number is not always the one on the public where-to-file page.
The oldest reading on this page is from September 13, 2026. A check in our build fails the site when any reading here passes six months, so a number cannot quietly age on this page. What that does not do is notice the IRS changing a number this morning — which is why the source link and the read date sit under every fact rather than a badge saying the page is verified. The rest of the IRS record is held to the same rule.
Sending it
Upload the pages, check the preview, and send. No account, nothing to cancel, and the card is authorized when you press send and charged only once the receiving fax system acknowledges the pages. If it never does, you are not charged. A cover sheet is generated with the routing fields filled in from what you entered.
